In recent articles we have spoken about the many reasons why Italy is becoming very popular with Canadians - for traveling, and increasingly for living.

The country is rich in landscapes and in many different cities, with many cultures to explore, and the hospitality of the Italians is warm and always open to foreign guests. In this article we will present three of the main reasons why Italy is quickly becoming the Canadians' favorite destination — the first one being Easy Residency with the Investor Visa.

There are many reasons why Italy created the Investor Visa program for foreign nationals, including Canadians. One of the main reasons is to attract foreign capital to Italy. Therefore, for Canadians and other foreign nationals who are interested in making an investment in Italy in order to obtain a residency visa, the Investor Visa is one of the easiest ways to obtain Italian residency.

There are many different options available for the investments that can be made under the Investor Visa program. For example: Government Bonds – A very low risk investment, equal to €2 million, placed in Italian government bonds, in order to support the Italian economy. Italian Companies – An investment, equal to €500,000, in a private Italian company that is active, creates jobs and contributes to the local economy. Startups – An investment, equal to €250,000, in an innovative startup, with higher risk but also potentially higher returns. Philanthropic Contributions – A donation, equal to €1 million, for a project that falls within one of several categories, such as education, culture, immigration, scientific research, etc.

Once the investment has been made and the application for the Investor Visa has been submitted, the application will be processed by the Italian authorities. If approved, the Investor Visa holder and his or her immediate family members will be granted a residence permit for Italy, allowing them to live, work or study in the country - and after 5 years of residence, they become eligible to apply for permanent residency. In addition to this, as an Investor Visa holder, you and your family will have access to the Schengen Area, where you can travel freely for up to 90 days in any 180 day period.

For Canadians, and also for other foreign nationals who are looking for a new home, or even just looking to spend more time in Europe, the Investor Visa is an excellent option.

Another reason why Italy is quickly becoming the Canadians' favorite destination is the Attractive Tax Regimes created by the Italian government. In order to attract high net worth individuals, as well as retirees, to Italy, the Italian government created two innovative tax regimes that are extremely attractive for foreign nationals with significant assets outside Italy. These individuals can live in Italy tax efficiently. The two regimes are:

The €200,000 Flat Tax Regime. This regime was created for high net worth individuals who are relocating to Italy from abroad. The taxpayer will pay a fixed annual tax of €200,000 on his or her foreign-sourced income, instead of paying taxes on worldwide income at normal rates. In addition, there is an annual fee of €25,000 per family member, so the taxpayer's family members, such as the spouse and the children, can also benefit from the flat tax. Once the flat tax has been elected, the taxpayer and his or her family will also be exempt from paying inheritance and gift taxes on foreign assets.

The 7% Flat Tax for Pensioners. This regime was created for retirees who are relocating to Italy from abroad. Under normal circumstances, pension income is subject to progressive tax rates. However, for retirees receiving a foreign pension who transfer their residence to a smaller municipality (under 20,000 inhabitants) in southern Italy - in regions including Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria - the 7% Flat Tax for Pensioners can be a much more advantageous option. The regime is available for up to ten years.

The third reason why Italy is quickly becoming the favorite destination for Canadians is Reconnecting with Italian Heritage. There are millions of Canadians of Italian descent living in Canada today. Many of these individuals have never had the opportunity to experience the Italian culture firsthand, but are very proud of their Italian roots. For many Canadians of Italian descent, the idea of relocating to Italy is not just about finding a new place to live, but also about reconnecting with their family's Italian heritage and with the country of their ancestors.

In addition to the opportunity to reconnect with their Italian heritage, Italy also offers the possibility of dual nationality: Italian citizenship - where available - can be held alongside Canadian citizenship, with all the rights and privileges that come with it. It is worth noting that Italy significantly reformed its citizenship-by-descent rules in 2025, narrowing the categories of descendants who qualify - so an individual assessment of your family line is now an essential first step. As Italian citizens, they will have the right to live and work in any country in the European Union, making Italy an extremely attractive option for individuals looking to work, study or simply have more opportunities in Europe.

Why Italy? For many Canadians the idea of relocating to a foreign country can seem like a daunting and overwhelming task. However, for the Canadians who are considering the possibility of relocating to Italy, we would encourage them to keep an open mind to the country and all that it has to offer. With its beautiful landscapes, its history and culture, Italy has something to offer to everyone.

As we mentioned before, in many parts of the world Italy is commonly referred to as the land of love. But for many Canadians, Italy is also the land of opportunity. With the easy residency options, the attractive tax regimes and the rich Italian heritage, Italy provides a unique combination of advantages that are not easily found elsewhere. Whether you are looking to start a business, to retire or simply to experience all that Italy has to offer, Italy is a country that will captivate and inspire you.
