We are seeing a significant increase in inquiries from relocation-minded Americans drawn to Italy for a variety of reasons. Retirement in Italy has always had a certain allure, but the perception of Italy as a destination has shifted in recent years - to the point that many Americans now consider it a realistic option at any age. The 7% Tax Regime for Pensioners Is Very Attractive to U.S. Retirees

A significant number of the American clients we work with are retirees, and Italy's 7% pensioners regime offers them substantial benefits. Under this regime, individuals receiving a foreign pension who transfer their tax residence to Italy - specifically, to a municipality with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants in Southern Italy (regions such as Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria, Puglia and others) - can opt to pay a flat 7% tax on all their foreign-source income, instead of the ordinary progressive rates. The regime is available for up to 10 years, and applicants must not have been Italian tax residents in the 5 years preceding the move.

For American retirees, the interaction between this regime and the U.S.-Italy tax treaty - including how Social Security and other U.S. pension income is treated - deserves careful individual analysis: in the right circumstances, the combined outcome can be remarkably efficient.
