Main Requirements for the Expat Tax Regime As a Remote Worker in Italy

To qualify for Italy's expat tax regime as a remote worker you need to fulfill the following requirements:

Remain a tax resident in Italy for at least 4 consecutive years. Carry out employment or self-employment activities that have a main base in Italy. Be considered a "highly skilled" individual in accordance with Italian immigration legislation. Have been a tax non-resident of Italy for at least 3 years preceding the move — a period that rises to 6 or 7 years depending on prior employment history.

Benefits of the Expat Tax Regime

If you are an expat you will enjoy the following tax benefits:

50% tax relief on earnings from employment or self-employment in Italy up to 600,000€ per year for 5 years. 60% tax relief on earnings up to 600,000€ per year for 5 years for specific categories of expats (i.e. those with minor children or new parents) — in that case, only 40% of earnings are subject to tax.

Note that if you continue to work for your current employer abroad but relocate to Italy, your required prior non-residency period is extended to 6 or 7 years in order to qualify for the expat tax regime.
