Family Reunion in Italy: The Critical Steps for Securing Your Dependents' Permits
Moving to Italy as an individual is one challenge; ensuring your entire family can join you seamlessly under the Family Reunion (Ricongiungimento Familiare) process is another. This pathway allows the principal permit holder to sponsor close family members (spouse, minor children, or adult dependent children/parents under strict conditions) to live legally in Italy. The process is notoriously meticulous, relying on two key, non-negotiable thresholds: Income and Housing Suitability.
Step 1 – Financial Test (Income Threshold)
The Italian government wants to verify that the sponsor in Italy has a stable income, sufficient to support the family members being reunified without their becoming a burden on public assistance. The minimum income threshold is calculated by reference to the annual Social Allowance (Assegno Sociale): as a general rule, the sponsor must demonstrate an income of at least the annual Social Allowance increased by half for each family member to be reunified.
Critical Tip: the income must be stable or increasing, and sufficient for the entire duration of the permit. Many applicants miscalculate the required amount for their family - we will be happy to calculate the correct threshold for you.
Step 2 – Housing Test (Accommodation Suitability)
Unlike most other Italian visa applications, family reunification also requires proof that the sponsor's dwelling in Italy is suitable to accommodate the incoming family members. The required Housing Suitability Certificate ("Idoneità Alloggiativa") must be obtained from the municipality (Comune) where the sponsor resides or from the local health authority (ASL), which verify compliance with the regional standards setting the minimum living space and number of rooms required for a given number of occupants.
Step 3 – Nulla Osta (Entry Clearance) Application
The sponsor in Italy starts the process by submitting an application to the local SUI (Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione) for the Nulla Osta (entry clearance), together with all the required financial, housing and family documents. Once the application is approved - which may take several months - the Nulla Osta is issued electronically.
The family members then apply for the Family Reunification Visa (Visto per Ricongiungimento Familiare) at the Italian Consulate in their country of residence.
Critical Tip: the Nulla Osta is valid for six months from the date of issue. All family members must therefore apply for their visa and enter Italy within that six-month window.
